I received yours of the 4th
today. I am sorry to tell you that I can't go to see William. we arrived here last
night in Washington. and we are going today to Maryland to drive the
invading rebels from the borders of Pennsylvania. I expect we will
have a fight with them tomorrow. I am about two hundred and sixty miles from William now. and I
can't go to see him on any account that I can fix it. we were three days on the water coming here with our horses on board. I can't do anything for William whatever, so you will have to do the best that
you can to have him home, take what money I have home and do the best with it you can in having
him home & if it don't reach
