Ripper is from Chambersburg and has been active in Democratic politics, while Mengel is from a Democratic family in Bedford County and has worked at the Valley Spirit since 1851. The former publishers, J.M. Cooper and P.S. Dechert, urge the patronage of both Republicans and Democrats for the new endeavor.
