Summary: The Spirit is surprised and saddened by the defeat of the Democrats in the state and local elections. It blames these defeats on the treachery of the straight-out Douglas faction led by Forney.
Converts to Republicanism

Summary: The Transcript announced that D. Watson Rowe and Wm. S. Everett had deserted the Democratic Party and joined the Republicans. This didn't surprise the Spirit because they "followed straight-out Douglasism to its logical conclusion."
