Committed Suicide
(Column 02)
Summary: Charles Louis Frederick, aka "Dutch Lewis," committed suicide in his hospital room after being left by his attendant. "His mind has been somewhat impaired, though he was never known to meditate any attempt upon his own life." He had lived for a while with Dr. Lambert and later Daniel Miller, and had been on of the "institutions" of Chambersburg. Sheriff Brandt discovered his body.

Bridge Contracts
(Column 03)
Summary: The County Commissioners opened the nine proposals for the iron work and masonry of two bridges they plan to build. Gilbert and Company of Chambersburg was awarded the contract for the iron work on the bridge over Conococheague Creek. They bid $24.50 per foot for the bridge's 78 feet. Miller and Eakel of Chambersburg won the masonry contract at $2.85 per foot. T. B. Wood of Chambersburg won the contract for the iron work on the bridge near Doylesburg over Tuscarora Creek. He will do the work for $14.75 per foot for its 33 feet. P. R. Shields will do the Masonry for $2.90 per foot.

The Horticultural Society Festival

Summary: The Franklin County Horticultural Society held their festival in the Town Hall on Friday and Saturday. Bad weather hurt attendance. Flowers adorned the hall, and large quantities of strawberries and cream were consumed by visitors. President of the Society J. L. Suesserott addressed the assemblage and the Rev. P. S. Davis read a paper.
